Some Adsense Tips

Posted in Google, SEO by Elliott Back on March 24th, 2005.

Google Adsense is an advertising solution for content providers that matches relevant ads to your pages. Advertisers select keywords they want to show their ads for and their maximum cost per click. Then, Google matches ads to your particular page. When viewers click on the advertisements, the click is recorded, the advertiser billed, and a portion of the cost per click awarded to you. You can read more about it at the Adsense Tour.

Here are some tips to help you succeed with Adsense:

  1. Don’t reveal your Adsense profits. Even though Google recently changed its terms of service to allow you to reveal your gross Adsense income, it’s wise not to. If visitors know your income from Adsense, their click behavior will change and become unpredictable. For example, if a visitor thinks that your Adsense revenue is too low, he may think you have a bad site and never come back. Alternatively, if it’s too high, he’ll never click on your ads, believing that enough other people do already.
  2. Don’t use the default style. By default, the Google Adsense ads are presented inside a blue border with black, blue, and green text. Please, change that. People are used to the default presentation, and skip over it without giving it a serious look. If you keep the Google default style, your ads will go unnoticed.
  3. Place your ads conspicuously. Don’t hide your ads at the bottom of your page: be bold. Place them near the top of the page, where they can be seen when the page loads without scrolling. Place them in a navigation bar, or some other “important” space on your website.
  4. Place one ad per page. Having a multitude of Google Adsense ads on a single page is worse than having none at all. There’s no way your visitors will appreciate having 15 different advertisements on one page.
  5. Preserve your content. Advertisements should not distract from your content, or else your visitors will be driven away. Make Adsense a cohesive part of your site design, not something slapped in at the last minute.
  6. Target profitable keywords. If you’ve heard of a hot topic, like asbestos litigation, or the Vioxx scare, why not set up a quick blog? The keywords are profitable, your entries will appear in Google, and you can maximize profit with minimal effort!

How come there are 5 ads on the right of this page and list ads on the left?
