E-Telephone Spam

Posted in Spam by Elliott Back on October 27th, 2004.

Is telephone spam a new marketing ploy? I registered cornellstudent.info to redirect here the other day with 1and1, my provider, because they currently have a free 25 .info domains promotion. Today I get a call from A+ Hosting who want to host, develop, and build my site. Caller ID is “unknown.” Presumably they watch the new DNS records and call those registrants with telephone numbers to try and get business. It’s not appreciated. If they’d have only checked www.cornellstudent.info, maybe they’d have seen that I don’t need any any help with the site.

“According to folklore, October’s full moon is called the “Hunter’s Moon” or sometimes the “Blood Moon.” It gets its name from hunters who tracked and killed their prey by autumn moonlight, stockpiling food for the winter ahead. You can picture them: silent figures padding through the forest, the moon overhead, pale as a corpse, its cold light betraying the creatures of the wood. “

“The blocking does not appear to be due to an attack by vandals or malicious hackers, but as a result of a policy decision by the Bush camp. “

Blog software updates

Posted in Blogging, My Blog by Elliott Back on October 27th, 2004.

So, the Wordpress customization is coming along well. Here’s what’s new and hot:

I have installed and configured Staticize 2.5 to cache the dynamic content. This cuts the server response time by 1/5, from 1 second to around .170 seconds, which I appreciate. On the other hand, the rotating header is not inserted in between the cache deletion and the first hit, but is written into the cache for the second hit. Because of this, I am simply caching the header now, which will update with each new post, and for each different section. But no more hitting refresh, guys. If you’re interested in configuring it yourself, see Time flies.

Comments will now automatically subscribe you to them via email. If you post a comment, be prepared to follow the resulting thread. Of course, the email gives you an unsubscribe link.

There are now proper author sections for each author, with archives. That’s all for now, but those are important, I think. I’m concerned about the caching plugin, which I think I’ll improve after I get some free time. And, I showed my mother how to log in! Hopefully, family posts to come.
