Industrial New Years Resolutions
Happy 2005, everybody!
Rather than list my own new year’s resolutions, I’m going to follow up on my promise and write some resolutions for other people. Well, whole industries, actually.
The Portable Media Player Industry
- Make our media players affordable …
- … by not stuffing them with non-core features that are rarely used.
- We will not compromise usability for affordability. Interface and design are priorities.
The Video Game Industry
- Work more closely with ratings agencies and families to promote constructive, healthly video games.
- Sacrifice the production timeline and delay games when testing is insufficient and more bugs need to be found. No more patches.
- Make controls a top priority. There shouldn’t be steep control learning curves.
The Music Industry
- Stop suing.
- Work with Microsoft and p2p software groups to come up with a micropayment DRM system delivered across p2p networks. Take advantage of what’s out there to reinvent the music market.
- Sign more small, unheard, indie bands and bring them into the limelight.
From Sir Shannon’s suggestion: “Pick 3 industries and list the top 3 new years resolutions for each of those industries.”
