When Google & Searching become too helpful

Posted in Google by Elliott Back on February 19th, 2005.

Google has a new autolink feature that some people think could be a privacy and intellectual property problem. What autolink does is automatically identify linkable content and add links to its own services. Addresses would be linked to Google maps, names of celebrities to Google images, etcetera.

Personally, I think that if done well, this is a great idea. Perhaps a UI with transparent overlay and injected onMouseOver javascript and minor text styling to make their injected content a) obviously foreign to the page, and b) inobtrusive to the content. The last thing they’ll need to consider is also reading c) an HTML meta-directive that could disable the feature on a website. This way they will still be able to provide their information service, while avoiding angering many sensitive customers.
