Modern Street Morals

Posted in Law, Music by Elliott Back on April 20th, 2005.

If you’re a concerned parent, or just wondering why kids grow up and commit crimes, I’ll toss out the rap connection again with this lyric from 50 Cent’s The Massacre, on a song called My Toy Soldier:

I ain’t got no conscience,
no morals, or nothing.

Here’s what to do if you see ‘em approach me:
Pop! that nigger, I don’t care if he know me–
half the niggers hatin’ on me used to be homies.
I don’t trust them when they smile or frown, ’cause they phoney.

Everytime I come around they call the po-lice on me,
That’s why the D’s in the precinct know me.
They know about my rap sheet,
they know about how I clap people,
run like I’m in a track meet,
swift with the mac beat.

A translation for the sheltered erudite:

I am a sociopath!

Even if a friend approaches me, shoot him.
I don’t care if we used to be friends–
I don’t trust them anymore!

Whenever I’m seen in public, they call 911–
That’s why the District Attorneys know me!
They know about my crimes, murders, street life, and my MAC-10.

In other words, some of the songs that regulary break into the top-40 popular music charts and get played all across America advocate extremely abnormal, criminal behavior. It’s disingenuous that the lifestyle gets labelled cool. Do you really want the DA’s on you?
