A visit to MoMa

Posted in Friends, Travel, Art by Elliott Back on January 12th, 2006.

Yesterday I took a trip to the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, NY. The student entrance cost was only $12 if you had your ID, and the galleries open as early as 10:30. I thought that it would be ho-hum, another art gallery filled with indescribable and utterly abstract paintings, but MoMa surprised me with the following masterworks:

Starry Night

This is Van Gogh’s Starry Night, perhaps his most famous swirly painting. To see an original, even behind a thin pane of glass, literally took my breath away and gave me shivers head to toe. There was another portrait there of his, and a landscape of olive trees. The paint was so thick you could follow the strokes of his brush, look at the layers…

Christina's World

Andrew Wyeth’s Christina’s World, an American icon. You’ve seen this everywhere…. gosh!

Retrospective Bust of a Woman

Salvador Dali’s Retrospective Bust of a Woman, along with the famous “Melting Clocks” piece, Moment of Explosion.

In addition, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Paul Cézanne, and Gustav Klimt were all well represented in the gallery. Fantastic. If you’re curious about what’s on display, you can browse their collection online.

I would have really liked to see that painting of olive trees!
My favorite trees by my favorite artist.
