IE 7 Beta 2: Quick Tabs

Posted in Computers & Technology, Spread IE, Browsers, Microsoft, Graphics, Interface, UI by Elliott Back on January 31st, 2006.

Internet Explorer Beta 2 Preview introduces a new and very cool feature that they call quick tabs. Yes, this is a feature that Firefox has not come up with, which is an efficient graphical display of the content of your tabs. At any point while using the new IE, just hit control-q and up comes the quick tabs display:

IE 7 Quick Tabs

As you can see, IE7b2 organizes the tabs into a matrix with small picture previews of each website. From this page, you can choose to switch to a tab quickly, or close given tabs.

Firefox doesn’t have it built in… but there is an extension that will do the same thing:

    addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1457&application=firefox

This has been in SafariStand for quite some time. I prefer their implementation, too - a sidebar on the left, always visible, instead of having to be opened in another tab.

Firefox isn’t the only app Microsoft steals from, silly. ;-)

The AOL Browser for Windows already has that functionality built in as well.

IE7 continues to add features already available elsewhere. Why, exactly, is it such a great upgrade again?

It would be better if the icon at the extreme right of the tabs is change to use for closing tabs instead of opening new one because that can already be don by clicking on the blank area.

Take a look at www.tizmos.com - it’s pretty much a web based version of quick tabs, you can add websites and it’ll show thumbnails of them, you can test it out without an account at www.tizmos.com/default.aspx?t=spon
