How to crash and restore your Creative Vision M
The Creative Vision M, early 2006’s best mp3 player, can be crashed while playing a video and rapidly changing the playback speed:

It will just hang on a particular video frame and speed on the display, and not do anything. Inserting the Creative dock doesn’t help. However, a quick pinprick to the reset button located on the bottom panel of the device will restore it to perfect working order. It seems that you shouldn’t make it possible to scroll through playback speed settings at high speed…

Hello,
Thx for the tip of the reset thingy. It worked like a charm.
My Zen crashed when I tried to make it stretch a video to full screen.
I’m wondering however why I could not find this solution in the booklet nor on the Creative website.
It IS a great little toy, but my enthousiasm has weakened somehwat by this crash. Thx again.

By the way, G. Emmens, this Reset information IS outlined in the Creative Vision M booklet.

Mine won’t start, it crashes on bot, gets to the ZEN screen and hangs, Ive tried resetting, tried rebooting, run a scan disk, but nothing it keeps hanging in the same place, so I cant even turn it off!
Has anyone had this problem?, any ideas?
I found the recovery menu by accident (Hold the power button to the right and you hit the reset button, and you get a recovery mode menu)
I’m thinking the next step is to replace the firmware, but im a litte worried it may kill it completely, then there is always the last resort option of formating it and starting again!
Im finding the unit to be quite unsatisfactory as it hangs often, especially when synching with my laptop!

My Zen Crashed while I was rapidly changing songs in the gym, when I reset it, the library rebuilt, and it came back on, but all my playlists and half of my songs had disapeared… very very disapointing as this is my 2nd Creative Zen Vision M, worse now, It won’t sync up to my computer, or Napster, so I can’t get my playlists back!!!
Any one know how to do a hard reset? Hopefully that will help…
Thanks TJ~
ps, if it didn’t break down, I would LOVE this thing…

My Vision:M crashed while i was changing song at home. I have tried everything, “Reebot”, “Clean Up”, “Replace Firmware”, even “Format All” won’t work, everytime I try this message, “Harddisk Error” pops up. It also makes weird sounds. It’s ******** irritating.
If somebody knows what to do please post it here!

Thank you so much for the tip!!! I was absolutely distraught when it froze…

My Vision M crashed when I dropped it… STupid, I know, but still. So, when I turn it on, it has some sort of disk error. I get the options like ‘reboot’, format all’ etc, but the device won’t respond to any of these. I too get the ‘Harddisk error’ on the screen, so think something inside has shot loose, not sure what. Anyone has a clue?
(JOERGEN: does this sound like the same problem you have?)

Mine also crashed while I was rapidly changing songs in the shuffle mode. It seems like this thing likes slow handling of its controls. It gets overwhelmed if too much commands are given to it in a short time.
I feel let down by creative after paying over 200 USD for this thing.
Mine sprung back to life after I hit the reset button using a staple, It went into rebuiding mode and then everything is normal.

Mine crashed so often i had to send it off to get repaired. Then they sent me another one, and the same thing happened. Then they sent me yet another one, and the same thing happened. I got my money back eventually and spent it on an ipod!

Hey thanks for the info, I swear I looked over the player for the reset button but in my haste couldn’t see the thing. Worked like a gem though, went straight to a song after loading, be patient with it though, just let it do it’s job as it will hold on the formatting at 100% completed for a few minutes.
With the software for the player, I just couldn’t stand how long it took to format everything and then wouldn’t put the music on the player. It was rivalling the iTunes for "run by The Man" award… I downloaded Media Monkey and have never looked back. With Media Monkey you can set it to only load your selected playlist, it reads other lists on your computer that you can load up and you can set it to automatically sync your different devices to different lists and settings judging by which you plug in.
I went through an iPod, a toshiba Gigabeat and a Zen before deciding on the Zen (harder to navigate but 10 times better battery life). The iTunes updated software doesn’t read 80% of the music on my computer, whereas the older version of iTunes did (don’t be fooled by this), even if you buy the music from them, it won’t work if they think it’s too old. The Zen software loaded a few more songs but duplicated everything to the point where I had 600 songs but only because it duplicated everything by 3 (and I have way more than 200 songs). The Gigabeat was perfect with everything but the battery would die in 4 hours, wouldn’t hold battery on switchoff-same as the iPod- and the fidelity was poor to the point where I could hear the faintest crackle (if you love your music to sound perfect, I don’t recommend this device).
I almost gave up on MP3 devices after this escapade but thanks to an unknown persons advice on the Media Monkey I can sleep at night. Good luck!

I thought the m vision crashed only occasionally.
It does even after converting the files with the creative software.
trying to solve the prob I´ve downloaded the last firmware but it doesn´t work. It really drives me up the wall!
It´s hard to believe but Creative, house of the sound blaster, had put on the market a device which costs me 230 Euros without testing it properly.
It´s a shame. Will sell this **** soon.

Also for recovery mode hold the power slider towards the power icon and then pin prick it in its hole. The recovery screen will come up.

Worked great, used a toothpick, (all I had at the time), and it reset perfectly and as far as I could tell, I did not lose anything, but of course time will tell as I start looking, something may have gone away.
This thing is all I did was hit pause and suddenly it went south. First time in 6 months that I have had any issues at all.
Thanks for the great info.

Ok, my Zen Vision:M froze up, so i reset it. But then all it showed was the ZEN logo when i turned it on.
here’s a couple of tips on fixing it if you have this error:
first try the “clean up” option
If that doesn’t work download the latest version of firmware from the Creative website and try installing it on your player
If that doesn’t work, try installing the firmware onto your player via a computer that doesn’t have the Creative software installed
finally, if that doesn’t work, select the “Format All” in the recovery mode
If that doesnt work, repeat the above steps
and if that doesn’t work, email Creative
and if they send the usual bull
ask for a new one or a refund

i have a problem that is similar to what other people have experiance. One day my Zen Vision M crashed, so i pushed the reset button. After that half of my songs were deleted and all my videos. Even videos that were already put on there when i got my zen were gone. Now my computer wont recognize my zen. It will still charge. What sould i do? Should I send it in to get repaired?

Dude,
Thank you so much. Couldn’t get the computer to recognize my player and it kept trying to rebuild to no avail. Using the reset, I was able to load new firmware and format the hard drive. Gotta reload 50 GB worth of stuff, but a small price to pay to have my baby back.
Thanks

my creative vision m has tottally freezed.
i have resetted it numerous times but last week it kept on stopping 3/4 of the way on the rebuilding. but i solved that by doing the clean up and then rebooting on the recovery mode…
but today it froze and i did the reset thing again and it froze half way on the rebuliding so i tried the recovery mode and clean up and reboot but it came back on the recovery mode after being switched off
i then pressed reload firmware and plugged my device into the usb slot and went onto the creative firmware website and downloaded it. it told me to plug in my device , but my device was already plugged in.. so what is a solution towards this problem??
someone please help me !
thanks

Kool everyone, i got a problem. I was playing a track on my creative and it froze so i hit the reset button. However when rebuilding it stopped around 1/8 of the way and now all my playlists, videos & photots and art is gone and i only have 96 songs on my creative (with no art work) as compared to the 3700 i’m meant to have.
IT GETS WORSE…. Now my computer will charge the player and it says “docked” wen connected however it will not recongnise it is a creative player and im unable to view any of the files or add or remove anything (doesnt show up on my computer).
INTERESTINGLY… my MP3 still says i have 9GB remaining (which is the same as it was b4 this happend) indicating that all the data is still there but theres some sort of a malfunction so it won’t rebuild & restore all of it.
Please help me….i’m an artist myself n this is KILLIN ME!!!

My Creative Zen Vision M is stuck in recovery mode. Nothing seems to work! I tried reloading the firmware, but the creative program does not recognize the device is docked. Clean up, rebooting, format all - none seem to work. Reset just sends it back into recovery mode. Can’t get out. I’ve had this unit for about 8 months and it’s worked fine until now….
Does anyone know what to do?
on June 9th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
Ann: I am having the same problem as you. I’m at a loss as to what to do and I have read bad things about Creative’s customer support.

hi everyone, i’ve had loads of problems with my zen - first off (this was very soon after i bought it) i tried putting photos on it but it froze and i had to wait until it ran out of battery. So i just stopped putting photos on there.
Then a few months later i went on my computer and tried to add something but the ‘add media’ window would not come up. I discovered that the only way to get the ‘add media’ window up was to make sure that it was the very first thing i clicked when i went on my computer. Wierd huh?
So again several months later, i went on to find that the Zen Media Explorer didn’t recognise that my ZVM was plugged in - even though the ZVM and the computer both recognised it was plugged in. That problem went away by itself - although at times it does keep coming back and i find the best way is just to unplug it and leave it for a day or two.
One day there i was just walking along, i turned on my ZVM to find it was ‘rebuilding’. It got about halfway, then froze, so i just left it to run out of battery. later, i plugged it in to my computer to recharge, and yet again the software doesn’t recognise it (AAAAAARGGHHH!). I unplugged it and suddenly it was showing the dreaded recovery screen. I was going to press clean up but then it said low battery. And so i went online to see if anybody else had had the same problems - and here i am.
if anybody can help i would be forever greatful. i’ve had my ZVM for nearly a year now so i’m not sure i can send it back. pleeeeeease help!!

How do I tell if cleanup scan disk is working? There are … after Scan Disk. How long should the process take. I believe I have about 10MB of info on the 30MB model.

Yesterday I was busy working and wasn’t paying attention, so I accidently ended up dropping my player. I looked at it after picking it up and everything worked fine, or so it seemed. All of the buttons where working, and music still played. However, I tried turning it on today and it froze on the “Zen Vision,” or whatever it says, screen. I tried reloading the firmware, and after a quarter of the way, it tells me “Firmware Problem.” I decided a cleanup, also, and this is where I’m really lost. It took a while to get to 1%. It’s been about 5 minutes, and it is now stuck on 10,935%. It was just going up really quickly, but is 10x farther than it logically should be. I don’t care if I need to format, although any other ways would be better, but I have all my music still saved elsewhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated. =\
on August 5th, 2007 at 3:44 pm
Another fun way to crash your Zen Vision:M is to have no harddrive space available and then try to record some sound with the built-in speaker. It hangs on “Saving…” and says the maximum length of the recording is 00:00:00. Note: My zen had to rebuilt it’s library after this trick…

Hi all I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM!
Hope someone could help me cause it’s killing me.
First of all yesterday my ZEN fell but it had my brother’s protection care so it wouldn’t affect too much (I though, sice it wasn’t the first time but it ALWAYS worked PERFECTLY!) but when it turned it on it stuck on the “ZEN” screen and after awhile it goes on recovery mode…
I tried all: clean up, formatting, resetting, reloading the firmware but nothing happens but when I try to reload the firmware it says “Hard disk error” and I read somewhere that when your ZEN sounds like c*ap like “grgrgrgrgrgr” THE HARD DISK IS DIED! I had a problem with my first creative mp3 player I ever bought, (zen nomad 40g). Hard drive crashed. Replaced it with the vision M, but made sure to get the extended 2 year warranty through the retailer. Creative wasn’t much help with the original nomad, but the retailer’s policy gets me the amount I paid within two weeks. I cannot express how much a $90 investment in a warranty for 2 years is worth it. Worst case scenario, break it, get your money back, and get an upgrade. Worth the money for having the peace of mind.

You can also crash the ZVM if you switch to the radio and are unable to pick up any radio signals in scan mode - at least that happens with mine. It’s actually more of a freeze up. Depending on where you are and how much you love your ZVM, you might not want to try this. If you do, go somewhere where you can be sure there’s no radio signals, e.g. an MRI scanner, a deep cave, a lift, the outback, etc. Again, the little reset button will sort you out.

HELP!! I got my Zen Vision M second hand from a friend as I lost my previous MP3. It worked perfectly when it was given to me…It played video, songs and radio. I installed all of the software but the computer wouldn’t recognise the Zen, so I uninstallled everything and reinstalled it several times, to no avail =( I defragmented my computer and cleaned it up and it still wasnt being recognised by the PC - I tried my moms laptop and my laptop aswell and it still doesnt work. I thought it might be something to do with the Firmware so I kind of deleted it. I bought a new sunc adapter and the Zen charges, but wont sync to my computer AND I CANT DO ANYTHING…when I switch the Zen on it just starts up in recovery mode and won’t do anything.
If anyone has any suggestions on what to do, please could you share your ideas??
Thank you, XxXxX

same story as everyone else…my zen is stuck on recovery mode…despite resetting this badboy…it just returns back to “recovery mode” …please help…my zen is my sole motivation for doing everything….EVERYTHING!!!
on February 6th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Note: One of the issues may be the connector to the HDD. I kept getting the recovery screen so I tapped the player (Zen Vision -not M -not W) on the right side like a pack of cigarettes. Not hard, mind you, just a lcouple light taps. I got the Zen screen back and it showed the last thing I tried to play. Then I tried to switch to a video I have played dozens of times. It froze again and then went back to recovery mode. I tried to cleanup a few time but it never showed any progress. Couple more light taps and running smooth like water again!
How I figured it out was, In my work vehicle I use a radio transmitter to here the audio on my truck speakers. but the drawback is i can “hear” the hard drive spinning in the form of feedback and whining in the radio speakers. I noticed that I didn’t hear the whining when it would boot to recovery mode. So try tapping your player on one end or the other till you can hear the HD spinning….
on February 6th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Make sure you tap a short length side, not the loang side. That means on the Vision M you’re tapping either the bottom or top, not the sides. and on the Vision or Vision W you’re tapping the left or right sides. I actually held mine like a pack of cigarettes with the right side up and lightly banged the Left End of the player to my left hand 2 or 3 times.

on March 13th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
For all those getting a disk error:
This may be due to the needle (read head) of the hard drive getting stuck in place on the hard drive table (Platter for those who know what I’m talking about)…
Solution?
You must be VERY careful with this solution as you have the potential to break the LCD screen: Face up, a.k.a LCD screen facing you, slam the player against a SOFT surface. If done right, and hopefully without causing more damage, this can dislodge the read head and get your player back up and running. This should be a last choice tho and I recommend it only to those that nothing else has worked for. Sufficient force must be used to actually give the player a very large jolt so make sure that your hand or any other object is not touching that precious LCD display. This method has helped me fix 3 different mp3 players now.

Hi,
I’ve got a problem with my creative zen M and wondered if anyone can help
Basically. Whenever I leave it off for a long period (ie. Overnight) i switch it on but it always rebuilds the library every time and its pissing me off. It’s making the battery low and it takes at least 15 minutes to rebuild fully. I have about 3000 tracks on it.
Also, I have to charge the battery through my laptop as the adaptor got lost, which is fine charging, but it won’t let me sync any music on windowns player. it’s always asking for me to connect a device, even though its connected.
Anyone help please?

So I just finished reseting it, and it was rebuilding for about a minutes, and now it works fine. From what I can tell, I no songs, or videos, or nothing, was deleted. Ill see when I look further. But from what I can tell, Reseting works perfectly. Thanks, everyone. -Ashley-

I had the same problem some of you guys had with the stuck in recovery mode screen with my Zen Sleek after trying to reload the firmware. My computer couldn’t read it and it couldn’t do anything do I contacted Creative customer support, they’re in Stillwater OK, which I just happened to be visiting so I dropped it off with them, went to lunch with my family, came back about 1.5 to 2 hours later and they had a new one for me. They’re really nice, helpful, and quick too.

but the reset button worked perfectly, everything is still there (i think!) and it still docks perfectly :]
was a bit worried because a lot of people seem to have had trouble after resetting, but mine seems to be okay.
Thankyou very much! i thought i’d lost my music forever, but i havent

Okay so I went to bed with my Creative Zen turned off and mostly charged. I woke up the next morning went to work came home and a few hours later I went to turn on my creative zen. Except it wouldn’t turn on and when it did only a black screen came up. Now it won’t turn on at all. I’ve tried reseting it and ‘clean up’ but it didn’t do anything. So I thought the battery died. I plugged it into my computer and the computer won’t recognize it and says there is an error and can’t read it. The Zen turns on when plugged in but the screen remains black. I can’t get a recovery menu up or a format it. What should I do?
