Microsoft NY Class Action Settlement
In a 350 million dollar class action settlement by computer hardware and software manufacturer Microsoft, New Yorkers who bought a personal computer would be eligible for a $12 refund in an antitrust settlement. If you purchased a computer between 1994 and 2004 that came preloaded with Microsoft software, please file a claim.

According to the NY Daily News,
No receipt or proof of purchase is necessary for individuals claiming purchases of five computers or less. Anyone who bought popular Microsoft software products like Word, Excel or Office during the same time frame is eligible for $5 vouchers.
This effectively means that everyone with a computer living in New York is eligible for a $12 * 5 = $60 refund. The deadline for submitting a claim is October 18, 2006. I filed a claim for three operating systems I bought:
- Windows XP Professional
- Windows XP Home
- MS-DOS
Yes, I actually bought a copy of MSDOS in 1999 for some reason or another. I think I had a really ancient 386 model computer I wanted to load some of the old games on…

I wish it wasn’t just for the New Yorkers

The NY sttlement does not give you $5 per eligible item — If you take the settlement you will get a $5 discount per item that ou can only use to purchase new microsoft computer equipment. So you’ll wind up forking over another $1000 to microsoft to collect your $60 bucks. It’s ridiculous — a big nothing!

As usuall after a class action lawsuit, some high powered legal firm gets 10’s of millions of dollars while we get $60-$100 dollars off a $300-$1500 dollar computer. The same thing happend to a GM lawsuit in the early 90’s. The lawfirm got over 100 million and the defendants got a $1000 voucher on there next GM vehicle. In both of these lawsuits and many others the company looses very little if anything. In order to get your money you are forced to give more to the company.

It is August 12, 2007. Has anyone been able to find out where the vouchers are? I can’t get an answer from anyone.
