Is a picture this beautiful of the Earth worth the millions put into every shuttle mission? Definitely.

    Is a picture worth millions (tens, hundreds of millions) of dollars? Yeah, sure. I don't think so, buddy. I mean, really--"Let's let the kiddies starve so that we can finance more colossal wasting of fuel, more grand-scale pollution, and we'll justify it having no significant return on our investment by saying, 'Look, we have these pretty pictures!'"
    Who in their right mind thinks that way?
    The reason people think the space program isn't doing anything for them is because what little advancement in science and technology actually comes from it, is sold by the government to the highest bidder (or the fattest senator...'s friend), and ends up costing the end consumer (ie. the average citizen) even more for the "convenience" then if the same results had been eventually developed in a laboratory. I'm glad I'm not American.
