Too Many Hard Drives

Posted in Hardware by Elliott Back on November 26th, 2006.

How many hard drives is enough? I’ve got a hard-disk buying fever; they’re just so cheap:

I have three internal Seagate drives, four external firewire Seagate drives, a WD firewire drive, and two USB drives for a grand total of:

  • Internal: 320GB + 500GB + 250GB = 1070GB
  • Laptop: 120GB
  • External Firewire: 300GB, 300GB, 300GB, 400GB, 500GB = 1800GB
  • External USB: 40GB, 200GB = 240GB

This brings me to a grand total of 3230 GB, or 3.2 TB of disk space available to me at any given time. Imagine how troublesome my storage needs would become if I decided to say, use RAID?

those 500gbs cant be cheap. they have to be at least 150 each. when a person gets rich enough to splurge 150 on a whim, consumer goods are no longer providing any fulfillment. he has to move on to the greater materialistic conquests of life - ultramodern housing, connoisseurship, sexual tourism, a ticket to zero gravity, the concerts of beautiful idols…

I don’t know about hard drives, Elliott - but your eyemyspam site is sick! I’m not in the habit of opening from unknown senders but every once in a while curiousity rears its ugly head. Your site has saved me a couple times. Thanks -

Elliott: So, how do you back up that 3.2 TB of disk?

Aye, that’s the rub. It’s bulk storage and scratch disk for computational work, so I don’t really need to back it up ;)

How much of your disk DO you back up, and how?

I’m not just asking to annoy you: I’ve got real backup concerns and I’m trying to find a reasonable solution.

If I had a LOT of bandwidth, I might dump stuff to Amazon S3 or something like that, but I don’t. I don’t want to spend the money to build a D2D2T setup, and I think D2D is good enough, anyhow. I guess I could just do rsync-based incrementals and just swap out disks, but I’d want rsync to be able to span volumes–I want to back up to JBOD, not RAID.

    *ugh*

I back up, as of today, 0% of my disks. My motherboard supports raid, so I’ve thought about RAIDing my boot volume with something else, but so far I haven’t done anything. Backup is tricky. If I were you, I might try the MIRRA personal backup server.

Keeping a backup schedule of all that must be hell in itself.

I think it’s just an addiction, jk……….no there is nothing wrong with having that much disk space if you are actually using it. What is a complete waste is to have that much space just so you can say you have that much space. Kinda like a “Mine is bigger than yours” thing.

I’m just thinking of the power consumption of that…oy

I have a 500W in the desktop, with 3 SATA hard disks. Then I plug the 6-8 externals into the wall using a $40 belkin strip of some kind.
