Wordpress.com Adult Blogs

There’s nothing in the terms of service that I can see that would prohibit you from running an adult-themed blog on Wordpress.com, but it seems a little bit distasteful to feature blogs with adult content on the front page. The one I ran into today wasn’t popular enough to eclipse Robert Scoble, but what if it were powered by Fark or SA, who regularly link to distasteful adult content? Then we’d have an interesting problem.

Visiting this blog produces the following (censored) adult content:

I’ve blurred out the screenshot–I almost want to blur out the text as well–and I’ll leave the rest to your imagination. I certainly am not going to link to that here. But, there’s a point I want to make. I’m not offended by running across this kind of adult-content, just surprised. Many more would be outraged. Certainly, either reaction is a bad one for Wordpress.com, who need to come up with an automatic rating suggestion system that can at least try to flag adult content and display an “adults only” tag near listings with suspect blogs. The same could be said for a splog, etc.

Hi, I have an adult blog, hosted at WP (sorry, I won't spam you with the link ;) ) It was quickly discovered by the community and reported, you know, when you're logged in, there is a WP toolbar at the top and it has the option "Report as mature".

The result is that the blog now has lower visibility, or rather complete invisibility, the pings don't work, it's not listed anywhere on wordpress.com and all in all is pretty hidden.

But you're right, TOS don't say anything about adult blogs, so they are allowed.

I can understand that there are people that get "offended" and "outraged" by adult content, yet it seems that I also know of these types to be signing up to adult websites in the privacy of their home. I believe the term for those types is hypocrites. Now I'm not speaking against anyone that is truly offended by such materials. Everyone has the right to have their own beliefs.

Personally, I think if someone wants to start an adult blog, though, to invest the very small amount of money to pay for hosting (not expensive at all) and install their own copy of WordPress. It would be nice if WP had an age verification plugin.

Wordpress.com does allow mature blogs, they just don't list them in the public directory. I agree with that because I wouldn't want a kid or minor accessing an adult blog. On the complaints page it mentions about adult blogs. http://wordpress.com/complaints.

great blog adult content is always going to be questioned i think as long as it is not made available to minors then there should'nt be a problem

I agree that adult content should be hidden from minors. But on internet, how much you can hide? Anyone can find one or the other way to access it. The thing that is not harmful for one person might be dangerous to the other. Moreover you can't stop anyone to post something out here.
