Wordpress Spam Rate Limiting
I just had a brilliant idea to really slow down the spammers. First, go install mod_limitipconn. Then, add something like this to your .htaccess file to limit the number of simultaneous spam comments:
<IfModule mod_limitipconn.c>
<Location /wp/wp-comment-post.php>
MaxConnPerIP 1
</Location>
</IfModule>
This will prevent them from streamlining requests, essentially denying them the right to post multiple times at once. This is good, because it means that you have turned spammers from parallel to sequential machines!

I personally have found that after using this captcha comments plugin I have dramatically limited the number of spam comments I get. I think I’ve only found one in moderation (obviously I still use Akisimet and Spam karma 2) with it but it works very well.
Originally I was using Bad Behavior but have removed it and things have been great. So, now it’s just the comments plugin, Akismet and Spam Karma2.

Akismet works well enough for me… someday perhaps I’ll try using something more hefty, revive hashcash, etc
