Amazon.com Redesign: Wow, it’s Different

Posted in Web 2.0, Interface, Amazon by Elliott Back on September 8th, 2007.

There is nothing on the major blogs yet, but our friend Amazon.com has a shocking new homepage. I don’t like it much:

According to their remodelling page, they have changed the following:

  • Moved all their product categories to the left side using flyout links
  • Placed more emphasis on gift lists and wish lists
  • Provided more emphasis on their Prime program with a top-level link
  • Emphasized search with a larger bar
  • Changed to a different shade of blue

They have the following notice which states that not everyone may be able to see the page:

We’re still in our testing phase, and you may not see the new design all the time.

Why change? According to Amazon, “When Amazon.com went online in 1995, we sold only books. Now we have over 40 departments, from tools to toys, and we wanted to make it easier for you to find items in each and every one of them.” If you hate the new layout, let Amazon know by emailing navigation@amazon.com!

ha, u took my advice. yay! I like the new photo on ur main page. Also, “TV scam” works! They all line up now~~

Btw, I like Amazon’s previous webpage better. It seemed more friendly and personlized, and colorful ^o^.
But hmmm, what’s their motivation of changing? did they launch any new function?

No new functions! They just did it because they think it will make navigation easier.

Hmm, that new look for Amazon.com reminds me of Gmail. Did they get inspired by the Gmail interface?

I somewhat like the new layout, it made it more organized for my taste. Compared to before it’s easier to navigate throughout the different products now I’d say and that’s definitely a pro for a market place.

It actually took me longer time to find the categories that I always visit. I have to scroll the mouse and look at the sub-categories. If the one I am looking for is not there, I have to scroll the mouse again. This process is very time consuming.

Also, I wonder if Amazon.com even considered users who are not very good at mouse control.
