Smoking
So the tenant downstairs is smoking. The smoke wafts up a ventilation duct from his bathroom and into mine. Making my room smoking. Now, I love a good smoke like the next man, but when smoke comes uninvited, I get annoyed. So I went down to ask him to stop, knocked on the door, heard the tv and him get up, come to the door, and then … nothing. I kept knocking for a while, but you can’t fight passive aggressive, so I left. My game plan is to:
- Come back randomly until I get ahold of them
- Rat them out to the landlady
- Get an anti smoking injunction
Fortunately, the “no smoking” thing is in my lease, so if they don’t stop / aren’t force to stop, I can just recover my deposit and leave, since my lease has been breached.

Elliot, I’m a smoker myself. However I can’t stand smoke indoors. It lingers, gets stale, smells for days, etc. I ALWAYS try to go outside out of the respect for others… But I guess someone’s got to be ignorant, right? Good luck, and hope that no flames break out from that smoke!

Why not fix the ventilation duct so it doesn;t convey smoke? You’d solve the problem of cooking odors as well.Or don’t you care about cooking smells?
I wonder where all these hypersensitive squawkers come from. Back in smoking days–a mere twenty years ago– you never heard a word, I suspect you’re a recreational troublemaker as well as a smoker. How do you feel about quitting yourself?

I like smoke, just on my own terms. I bet I can think of some gases, like SF6, that you wouldn’t want floating around, but could find a use for from time to time.

Not liking smoke at all times is a matter of preference, not biology.

Your lease has been breached, have the landlord
take care of this or bolt.

They’re polluting your flat, they know it and they don’t care. Improve your environment and get some maybe considerate neighbours - tell the landlady.
It’s not ratting - what loyalty do you owe to someone who won’t even speak to you?
You have a better relationship with the landlady. Maybe she deserves to know that someone is cheating her. If I was letting a flat I wouldn’t want it left stinking and nicotine-stained. Then there’s the fire risk too.
