Attack of the AOL Aim Bots!
Whenever I sign on to AIM, AOL keeps adding two AIM bots called “MovieFone” and “ShoppingBuddy” to a new “AIM Bots” group of my instant messenger. They also send you this system message:
(15:37:03) AOL System Msg: AIM added a new AIM Bots group to your Buddy List.
(15:37:07) AOL System Msg: Send IMs to moviefone and shoppingbuddy for great holiday flicks and gift ideas. (To remove ‘em, just right-click and delete! Learn More)
They have a site for the new creatures. Interestingly, when you remove them, they continue to spam you:
(15:41:28) AOL System Msg: The following bots are no longer available and have been removed from your buddy list: shoppingbuddy. To find out more about bots, go to aimtoday.aol.com/aimbots
It seems AOL has gotten spammy here with my contacts list. From now on it will be an add/remove arms race:
I even tried talking to the movie bot. It wasn’t very smart:

Bots r bots. They’ve been around longer than the graphical web. S’ how we used to get fiels and all kinds (email bots).
Haven’t found many actually useful AIM bots yet, tho.
Yes, AIM bots can be quite unintelligent at times, or rather annoying, but they’re also useful on occassion.
To AL3X, no, the bots were created to be entertaining! Not all of them, mind you (So you are partially right), but SmarterChild, ZolaOnAOL, Spleak… Those are for entertainment, amusement… And they are rather amusing.
But I do agree that there is no reason to swear/cuss/curse, and that one shouldn’t complain.
Like most here said, but block the bots and then remove them, you should have no problems then.
It is truly amazing that some commentators have truly mastered proper street language.
I use Trillian at work and Pidgin Portable everywhere else and I hate it that AIM throws these bots on my program (with no warning in either place). It just seems like a poor business practice to me but considered the source (AOL) it does not surprise me. I was an AOL dial up user back in 95-97 and they provided a great service. Now, they are trying to compete with Google, Yahoo and MS and they cannot find any traction with users.
Mandygurl, i agree with your post; women can be smarter than men and vice versa, but:

I agree with the last 3. this forum was made for no reason at all.
You people all just need to quit complaining. I get it if you complain a little bit about AOL just adding them and everything, which you did, so just move on. But All of you complaining about them being boring seriously need to just shut up. HELLO they weren’t created for your entertainment purposes and if they are boring get off your computer and go do something or find a real person to IM. Its as simple as that. You have no right to complain about them being oring or retarded because they weren’t made just for your benefit, they were made for people who want information and such. Get over it and stop cussing each other out like a bunch of 2 year olds.
