Back Tattoos

Posted in Art, Graphics, Health, Life by Elliott Back on June 8th, 2006.

I was browsing the Flickr set for Tattoo photos and decided to blog about the tattoos that I liked most and least. I’m most interested in the back, because that’s the easiest place to hide one, and the most likely place I would be to get one, if I were a girl. Guys generally put them more visibly on their arms, so I’m out of luck for now.

0) My least favorite of the batch. The fuzzy, perhaps self-done, tattoo. It looks out of place, because it’s overly large with wide lines, and lacks definition. here is an example of a sea horse that fits this description:

1) Then, there’s the full back. Instead of highlighting natural beauty, it seems to exists to cover it up. Here’s a great example, but it hides the person underneath too much:

2) Putting a large tattoo on the lower back is extremely popular. However, I feel that size is again an issue, because the tattoo doesn’t seem properly connected to the rest of the body:

3) Slightly smaller tattoos on the lower back are better than large ones:

4) While placed a bit too high, smaller is better when the lower back is concerned. Note the delicacy in simple lettering in a foreign script:

5) Here we being to see something I appreciate. The dragonfly is minimally drawn in looping radius, unfilled. In simplicity and placement on the lower back, art is created:

6) Finally, the best tattoo of the bunch. It is a butterfly in color, placed high on the back. It is delicate and blends with the skin:

Personally, none of these feel quite right. I think I’d want to see something more subtle, on the lower back. Something with extremely fine lines, stretched long across the back, but vertically very condensed. Perhaps Julie will have some suggestions for me, although #5 and #6 would look a hundred times better on her than me.

  5. Laure says:

The full back would be better were it not done with bright solids. If it were thin lines in reds and blacks, it would be nice. I favour more tribal approaches.

  8. kat says:

the lovwer back ones are also considered trashy, giving them the popular name ‘tramp stamps’.

I agree with you about the importance of delicate fine lines. I’m seriously considering getting a tattoo on my lower back, but instead of a symbol it will be only writing. A small quote. I want the text to be cursive, very delicate and elegant lines, nothing too fancy.

I disagree with you on the full back tattoo. While a womens body is one of the most beutiful creations on earth i belive that through the expression of the inner beuty of a women through tattoos can only make that person more beutiful. Ofcourse some simply get tattoos to be tattoed and that is not atractive but to be able to see a shimmer of what is realy inside a person is an amazing thing and not many arts can brieng that to us the way tattoos can.

I want my old lady 2 get my name on her lower back. I kinda want my name to be in a tribal fashion/or blended in with tribal markings. Anyone know where i can find some examples of stuff like this. Email me, MIHARK2@aol.com.

yea the full back one is ight…but its a lil much…i think that there is to much goin on….there is no focal point,,no rythm to it..my favorite is the butterfly on the back…lower back tattoos usually look like tramp stamps…unless its a lizzard or dragon that comes around to the side of the tummy..

ok,while all of you have your opinions, let me give you mine….I dont know how old this posting is but..get over it.Its art,its created by someones hand and placed on someones body because they wanted it there.I think self expression begins with knowing yourself and what you are capable of.Opinions of tattoos are like *** holes everyone has one.many of you expressed disgust with the full back, but did you know that in many religions the art work you put on your body brings you closer to a natural high and empowerment than praying?I guess there should be more education and less judgement when it comes to people’s bodies. You are the same people that scoff when you see an overweight person walking down the street.Or a black man walking next to a white woman….Get over it.

    sl..s did to moi! BB

i was lookin’ at tats for some ideas on how ta do mine differently.
my oppinion on tats are that if it expresses what type of person you are in the tat or enhances your sensuality go for it!
Though i hate really crowded ones cos they usually look like a big fat blob of ink on your body if it doesn’t flow with your shape.

  19. krystal says:

I totally agree with the getting old and things goin’ flabby is the main concern when ya get a tat too.

so try not ta get a real big one near your main sagging areas :)
    is the whole idea
