I cracked my iPhone screen by pressing on it. I was taking a picture and the screen shattered before my eyes. I saw it and a piece of glass popped out where my thumb was. The AT&T people were great but the Apple people looked at it for about 2 seconds and just kept muttering "physical damage." That's all Loren from the Apple store could manage. "We don't pay for physical damage." I am looking to see if I can join (or start) a class action suit. I had my piece of crap phone for 5 whole days before it broke.

I purchased a refurbished 3g iphone from att in Jan of this year. When you buy a phone, there should be a little research done instead of just falling for the advertisements. Obviously it's a fragile phone and if you tend to have a lot of accidents with previous cell phones or you need a tough cell phone thats going to last and stand through rough use, the iphone probably isn't for you. Not sure how so many people were suprised by the screen being glass. Anyway, despite it all and having a tendacy to drop cell phones in the past I still purchased the iphone. Even the rep at an ATT store tried to talk me out of it because they do not cover the iphones. Well, bought it anyway and I couldnt be happier. I love my iphone. Because its such a fragile phone I was more careful with it than previous phones and always kept it away either in a pocket or purse. But accidents happen and yes I had dropped it accidentally a few times on my tile floor without ever having the glass shatter. However, one fateful night the phone fell out of my pocket onto a bathroom floor and the screen shattered. Apple is not to blame, I am. Fortunately, I got lucky and was able to purchase my original iphone out of contract due to a mix-up with ATT, so I was still eligible for an upgrade and bought another refurbed 3g for $50. Now on that phone the wi-fi didnt work, and Apple is currently working on getting that fixed for me since they cover refurbed Apple equip with the same warranty as a new apple product. Seems like a good company to me. They were very friendly and helpful. Not once was the iphone advertised as durable phone. And when I had a windows mobile phone the touch screen didnt break, but it definitely stopped working after a year... my iphone still worked even after being cracked. Seems worth the money to me :)

I too have a cracked screen on my brand new iPhone 3G s. I don't even recall an incident that would have caused it. It just seemed to appear out of nowhere! Anyway, my only relief comes from the fact that I bought mine from Best Buy, along with the insurance that only they offer (to my knowledge). Although the insurance costs money, and there will be a deductible, I highly recommend buying from Best Buy for this very reason. Apple's approach to this crazy design flaw is unacceptable and is sure to land them in court.

This is no laughing matter and I mean no offense but your writing made me rofl for about 5 minutes. I cannot believe how this phone that was inside a soft leather case and covered with a protective film but shattered when it fell onto a carpet! And you say the glass exploded. It sounds like a "cutting edge" product alright. Thank god you didn't get hurt. I own the new Nano and I hope that's more durable than the iPhone. This certainly seem like a more serious issue than the issue they had with the first gen Nano which was also fragile as hell. But at least that had plastic screen which although would easily crack is not as dangerous as shattered glass. Apple is ridiculous for making products of such low durability. Your story was hands down the most astonishing. Thanks for posting.
