Cingular in Mexico

Posted in Travel by Elliott Back on May 26th, 2006.

When I visited Mexico, I wondered if my phone would work. The answer is: sort of. I was able to connect to a Telcel GSM network, but I couldn’t place any calls. Whenever I tried to call, I got a “Call Failed: Call Barred” message, a double slap in the face:

Telcel GSM: Call Barred

The funny thing–it would tell me when I got a new voicemail, but not let me dial my voicemail number. And yes, I tried local numbers, international prefixes, the works.

I think with telcel you have to call them and have it authorized. There’s another provider movistar who lets you make calls and receive texts without pre-authorizing it.

I’m with Cingular in the USA and my 8525 (HTC) works fine in Monterrey. Keep in mind that if you are in Mexico you have to dial area code + local number (10 digits) and for cell phones it is 044+10 digits.
