Elliott’s Mobile Edition

Posted in My Blog by Elliott Back on January 3rd, 2005.

Thanks to Alex King’s mobile edition plugin and this extensive list of phone and mobile user agents I know have my own mobile edition of the blog. I heavily modified the original plugin’s template to be more sensible and call more standard WP functions (wp_head, wp_comments) so it should work just like the regular-sized blog. If you’re using a PDA or cellphone and want to hit up my blog, now you can!

Thinking about it a little more, it might be a better idea to just switch the active stylesheet. That would have the downside of still downloading more HTML and image data than needed and hiding it, which might cause some cellphones to bug out. The way I do it now is perfectly minimal, if a little bit of a hack. Anyone have their own ideas?

Update: Another recent change is that only the last 10 comments will appear on a given page, with an option to expand the list to include all of the old comments. This should make it easier to follow discussions that still rage on, even though the original post has 70 or 80 comments.

Update 2: A number of visual inconsistencies have been dealt with, mainly with the sidebar appearing where it shouldn’t. The problem with that is my dev. monitor is a bad Dell LCD that overdoes the contrast. I’ve tried adjusting it, but that light grey sidebar really just looks white to me.
