Since XeroCool can’t seem to handle the load on his server about the new longhorn beta 1 screenshots, I’ll post them here. I’m currently downloading them from this bit-torrent at 596.8 Kb/s, where you can go to get original copies.

I’m going to leave this commentary as a comment, but I absolutely cannot stand the new operating system. What’s up MSFT? Come on!! Longhorn Beta 1 looks like Windows XP with a translucent skin? Where’s the cool UI system you talked about? Where’s the long-delayed winFS? Where is one single feature that makes Lonhorn stand out?
Just goes to show that there is such a thing as too much transparency.
The oddest thing is the position of the menus in IE7, beneath the address bar, and the tabs – very strange!
I could see using some transparency on any inactive windows, but they seem to do it on the active one as well?? Also, the ‘blur’ effect is really a strain on the eyes.
There’s also too much going on in the windows, in too many different fonts/styles. Hard to pick up on what’s important. I hope this isn’t the best they try to muster against OSX! All the hardcore gamers will stick with XP, and no businesses will upgrade for this stuff (they’ll stay on 98SE!

Uh, why on earth should the GUI have to look diffrent in order for you to like it?
Every version of OSX looks almost exactly the same as the others. When is the last time you seen a radically visually diffrent verson of Linux? It seems like you guys are looking for improved eye-candy or maybe just an excuse to bash Microsoft not a serious OS improvement.

I see Microsoft are still incapable of recognising the value of UI consistency, and thus Windows Media Player still looks completely out of place (in fact it looks even worse than it does on XP thanks to the quite nice greyness of Longhorn). But then, perhaps that will change before release.
I think they can definitely be accused of overuse of transparency though. I can’t be convinced right now that it’s more than eye candy as opposed to useful visual effects.
It looks pretty lame! And the transparency is confusing, not cool looking.

The UI itself is an improvement over XP, but not over Win2K. Just a little more Xwindows-ish. Sort of. But nothing worth telling your grandma about.

I think it looks great. What exactly are you guys looking for? Widgets? Windows that make sound effects when you minimize them, and shrink themselves with a cool animation. I’m not getting the complaints at all. If Microsoft had redone the whole UI I’m sure many of you would get on their case for that as well.

J3777o: Apple innovate with every release. They try things, they do things differently. Microsoft wait for others to innovate, copy the idea, lie about how good / close to completion their implementation is and then release something that is in most cases worse than the previous version.

There are about 12 different Window Managers for Linux and each one of them is radically different but then you’ve never actually seen them have you.
Despite all the complaints I see here, there are reasons besides eye candy for adding features to a UI. The biggest feature touted for Avalon is (was?) vector graphics. I can’t tell from the images here whether this has been implemented or not. What this means is that the GUI widgets are not images, but are instead drawn in real-time. What this means for you is that the UI will look the same no matter what the resolution. If you have a monitor that is 6000×6000 pixels, the size of the objects on screen will be the same, but they will just be sharper. This paves the way for virtually infinite resolution displays, and allows programmers not to worry about some details of screen size. OS X already has this capability. In fact, it is based on PDF, which supports vector based graphics.
I’ve noticed that they have placed a “How to Report a Bug” button on the Desktop. How much do you want to bet that one gets grossly overused?

Exactly. Can we just define “Beta” again? Wasn’t that the stage when the system design was mostly finished and the bug hunting and fine-tuning began? Microsoft seems to change stuff, BIG stuff, around until the very last release candidate. And they still leave a lot of stuff to be desired in the final versions. They should decide on ONE design at the beginning of the process and use their time to put that one design into code, instead of fiddling around with a crippled system until it’s unusable.
I think the people at microsoft forgot all about first impressions…
Why would anyone actually pay to upgrade just to see some more gui enhancements.
Just think about the youth.. they probably got copies of it already.
People should really look at the new functionality behind the graphical interface.
And keeping most tools the same makes it easier for people to migrate, think about system administrators, about your grandmother…

I haven’t been this underwhelmed with a set of Longhorn preview shots…since the last round of them. What I find disappointing is the proposed Avalon graphics subsystem in Longhorn is actually extremely capable and has some really cool idea…

Meh, I think it looks pretty nice. Its a bit late in the game, but they are going in the right direction. This combined with the new shell and winfs might actually turn windows into a modern operating system.
Im still never going to use it, but if they had a nice package manager, better integrated developers tools, a nice firewall system at least as powerful as iptables, and maybe a version that doesnt assume that the user is retarded (home for the grandma, pro for the accountant, and tech for the gamer etc) then they would really be able to fully establish themselves in their current market.
So, uhm, Microsoft is spending its time developing new Windows XP themes. Well, .. uhm.. yay?

Take me as a new customer. I’ve already bought XP and I am happy with it. XP can run all my stuff. Thus when my technical department publishes a report on whether my company should upgrade to Longhorn. They say yes, we should.
Then I find out that nothing except the visual effects improve, whereas the same hardware, when used with XP, runs faster due to less taxing resource usage. I will personally fire all my technical staff.
Then take me as a person with more clue. Namely a technical staff, who is ok with both windows and linux. After seeing Longhorn Beta, I know that the differences are minimal. I will not take the money to buy Longhorn, nor will I risk my job recommending Longhorn. I will save more by sticking to XP. But in no time Microsoft will do the “stop upgrading process” and kill XP. I can only migrate to Linux. I am forced. I am unhappy.
The Linux party has won another bit of time to play catch up. Business or not, it is only ethical to establish a development process as the people want it, and that is designs first, bug-fixing later. Not both at the same time. IE suffered the same fate. That is the biggest reason why people migrate to Firefox. Microsoft knows it. They have system that is so flawed they simply can only continue to bluff themselves. By virtue of good reputation, Linux will only extend its reach.
Note that none of my points include whining. It is all logic. Nobody can hold on by relying on market failure alone. And those who state that we nay-sayers are just being ourselves, take a look at your own posts. Which one has more logic than “You guys ill end up buying the next version of Longhorn anyway. Hell even I’ll buy it myself.” Are you sure? a Beta is a Beta, and it is used to let users preview important parts of a system.

The new shots are looking pretty good, however that’s not enough to persuade most people (and especially large companies) to switch to Longhorn. M$ needs to tackle bigger issues like how to effectively incorporate their anti-virus and anti-spyware products into the core of the O.S. etc. People are more worried about these things taking the hell over than looking for nice eye-candy, which frankly speaking, Linux (and KDE especially) is better at it than anyone else, including Apple.
It doesn’t matter that the only new thing is a lame theme for Windows XP. Most people will still buy it because it’s made by Microsoft.

I think they should give the start button a new shape instead of the same one as xp. Then when you click the start menu the menu will come up in the form of a torndo or something similar to give it a new feel complete;y different from xp

Wow, we infer from screenshots that Longhorn is a prettier XP. That’s amazing. Maybe my browser isn’t working properly and the interactive part showing off the underlying features aren’t working? I dunno, but while the screenshots look like a prettier XP, there’s so much more going on with Longhorn that we can’t see here.
Longhorn has a lot of new technology going into it, including the GUI subsystems. While the GUI has been recoded, why should it look different from the familiar Windows interface? There is a new kernel, filesystem enhancements, and lots of other things going into longhorn that you can’t see in these pictures. Until you actually TRY Longhorn and read the information on how it’s improved, I would reserve judgement since the screenshots only tell us how it looks. Also, who’s to say the person taking the screenshots didn’t change some of the visual features, such as removing the dock or enabling the transparency?
Personally, I would like to see some information and possibly demonstration, and definately receive some handson before I form an opinion about Longhorn. I don’t care if it looks like a prettier XP as long as it works better than XP.

Why people and companies should upgrade to Longhorn when XP is good enough?
The most important thinks are already in XP. And there aren’t any innovative feature to justify the bill.
People will learn that installing add-on like Copernic CDS, Windows Blinds and others can do the same or more than Longhorn.
And M$ will see the non-estusiastic users staying with XP. And don’t forget the Open Source pressure.
Microsoft will not sink. But it’s pie will shrink in the next years.

Nothing earth shattering here. I will hold my judgement for beta 2, MS has stated visible improvments will begin to materialize in beta 2.
The XP interface works really and is efficient. They don’t need to stray too far form the basics. However, the task bar is really tired and needs a face-lift.
WMP11 could use a kick in the pants also.
IE7 has been dicussed to death on these forums, so I won’t touch it.
Again, hold your judgement for the next beta.
I have to say the comments here are more disappointing than the screen shots. These are PICTURES guys, this in no way reflects how the OS runs. You cannot tell if this is a solid OS or not from a picture.
XP is the last version of Windows I buy. Everything from these screens is a ripoff or something else, and all the neat features (winfs/new shell/etc) are not going to make it into the first release. Micrsoft is falling behind, the sooner people realize that the sooner innovation can move on.

A large majority of the comments here are posted by complete and utter fuckwit kiddies. Transparency is an Option. The 3d enviroment desktop is an Option, Infact the only option that is not an option in longhorn is classic mode (or windows 2k theme).
But it seems little of you know anything of what is in long horn, such as the new harddrive format for security, the improved networking options, and the new simplicity of getting it working is a huge improvement over windows xp.
Before you newbies bash MS for the way its interfance looks and how Apple is so much better, http://www.aresluna.org/guidebook/guis/macos go look at how Apple looks exactly the same with the improved eye candy over time.
Linux is dying, the sooner you relise that, the sooner you can help the world get rid of hackers who give MS a bad name in the first place. Because we all know, if everyone who hacked MS hacked linux, linux would have just as bad name as MS.

Something I just noticed…what’s the source on these screenshots? I couldn’t find any articles or anything related to them. Anyone can install object desktop and make it pretty and slap a longhorn version info on it. Suddenly I’m not convinced these are legit.
You all are way too critical. These are all pre-beta 1 screenshots. All the GUI changes and how it looks is done between beta 1 and beta 2. This release it supposted to reflect a completeness in the fundamentals, security and reliability.

I would see that as being a very bad remark. For one, you have never used the system and have no way of knowing its performance. Secondly, gamers would be the first to switch to the new operating system because of one thing… Drivers. Most (if not all) Longhorn drivers have been removed from the kernel, not only making the system super reliable, but making performance better on 3D gaming. Windows XP is reliable, but people still get blue screens. 90% of those blue screens are caused by driver having a problem. Since they’re in the kernel, it causes the system to completely crash. In Longhorn, driver errors will cause the driver to fail and Longhorn will just restart that driver. Most of the time, you won’t even know it happened.

Elliott, thanks for the great screenshots, but how could someone with his hands on the newest version not know, at a bare minimum, what nearly everyone who can read knows: the major UI features will not be implemented until Beta 2 at the end of the year. That has been said time and time again in the last few months. Beta 1 has very few of the exciting features. We’ll have to wait for Beta 2 for those.
The rest of you are even worse. How can you tell anything from screenshots, anyways? Can you tell how polished the GUI is or how smoothly the windows move? When Beta 2 screenshots come out, will you be able to tell from them how smooth the vector graphics are, how responsive the GUI is or how seamless the combination of 2D and 3D is? Regardless, you’d be amazed at how much is going under the hood that you would never be able to tell from screenshots.
I know what to expect and when to expect it because I read every Longhorn article that I can find. I get a very strong feeling that most of you get all of your information from forums and screenshots. You’d be amazed at what’s going into Longhorn if you’d just read, too. Instead, you just sound like a bunch of kids who don’t know what you’re talking about.
Every single one of you will use Longhorn when it’s released and be blown away. You’ll like how it looks, but you’ll love how it moves and operates, what it’s capable of and how much better it is than XP. By then, you’ll have conveniently forgotten how you made fools of yourself a year and a half ago in forums and blog comments.

Thanks, Jon, for the overgeneralization of the people that have posted here. I’m actually one of the ones looking forward to the release. While I don’t expect much from microsoft, I do hope they don’t screw up longhorn. I am, afterall, one of the people that mentioned these are just screenshots, not actual technology previews of what’s to come.
Nimdae, yes, I overgeneralized, but those who’ve posted here who acknowledge that they’re only screenshots and who are looking forward to the release are few enough to realize that I’m not referring to them. I agree with you and am looking forward, myself.

Basing opinions on screenshots is *screwball*. I *never* stated my opinion of any OS based on screenshots. Instead, I got my hands dirty and *installed* the OS on hardware that I personally have control of (read: own) and ran the OS around my personal usability track until it threw up, and then ran it some more. And in my case, this has involved several Linux distributions, Solaris 10, various flavors of BSD, and three previous builds of Longhorn (4029, 4058, and 5048). An operating system can be said to pass my usability test if:
1. It runs on and supports my existing hardware and applications (including quite a few games).
2. It runs as well as, or better than, what I am running as my primary operating system today (Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005).
So far, not ONE operating system that is available today (and yes, that includes Longhorn) has passed my usability test.
Usability, not features that I won’t use or eye-candy, determines whether or not I will buy an upgrade to my operating system.
Longhorn *will* be fully skinnable, just as Windows XP and 2000 are today. (Per joint press release from Microsoft and Stardock)
Longhorn will support RSS, a feature I will actually use. (Per comments on Channel 9, the MSDN blog.)
Windows Indexing Service does NOT rely on WinFS, and is present and accounted for. (My own mini-review of build 5048 on Neowin.)

My god people, stop bitching. Have any of you actually tried this Beta? It’s actually quite stable and there are *MANY* more enchancements than the simple UI stuff you see in this limited selection of screenshots. Stop complaining that you don’t like what it looks like and actually do some research into what MS has developed and is still developing for integration into Longhorn. The UI stuff was just to appease all you bitchy “OMG, it’s so boring” people. Everything else is what sells the OS.
Based upon my experiences so far (this being just one of a series of Longhorn Betas/Alphas) I have worked with, my company will probably make the switch over to Longhorn with our next desktop roll-out after Longhorn’s release. We successfully migrated from NT 4.0, to Windows 2000 to Windows XP (including server versions of each OS) after each release and have not looked back. Each OS brings a wide range of improvements both from the client and server sides.
While we use MS-based software for most work, I have a number of other machines in my office (including AIX UNIX, three variants of Linux, and OS X Tiger) which I use for development purposes, to test cross-compatibility, and to test overall use, etc., but am still sticking with Windows for all operations due to its security (don’t ***** at me about it because anyone who knows anything about *nix knows that it’s just as insecure as Windows and requires just as much if not more patching than Windows), support, available software, and user-base. I have yet to find anything that even comes close to comparing with MS-based solutions at the enterprise level.

The people who whine are probably the reason M$ banned the screenies of a particular build of longhorn (can’t remember which). It isn’t the look that makes an OS the OS it is, it’s the ‘under-the-hood’ stuff. IF m$ did absolutely no work on the theme, but focused on security, feautres, driver support and the actual coding, then screenshots are useless, and a whole lot more people would be whining. I think that in this case, M$ did both: if you have been reading articles about longhorn as i have, u’ll notice that there is quite a lot of new, useful things. IMHO, the skin is nothing. They redesigned it a few times already! take windows XP for example (aka Whistler, at it’s development time). I can’t think of anyone who really liked their watercolor theme, but hey – the 3 xp-ish themes today are totally different. Besides, any1 can go on sites ( such as themexp ) to download different themes. They aren’t that hard to make, really. Therefore, the screenies should not be taken as a finished product look. The beta is released only for driver/hardware developers, who couldn’t care less about the theme. Again, it’s what’s under the hood, what drives the system, not how it looks. And it does look rather nice, no matter what u people say.

And of course, just because they’re screenshots, it _MUST_ mean that there’s nothing new in the backend!!!!
As for the UI its great that it’s now vector based but I doubt that the everyday use of a computer has been simplified or truly improved. As far as I have heard there is no really great addition that tells me why I need to use Longhorn instead of skinning my XP.

For God’s sake (if you believe in that anyway), please tell me they made it easier to TURN OFF the STUPID desktop fade effect via Group Policy? Of the dumbass features. Why it is enabled by default is insane/marketing/pukefest idiocy at it’s rawest form. “Yeah, fading is cool. The kids will love it!” (Joe MarketPuke). Translation: slow the machine down and they’ll love you even more, cuz it looks nifty!
I’m not impressed. I was eager to dive into LH back at PDC-03 when they touted WinFS and everything else that they’ve since chopped out to meet some self-imposed deadline. It looks like XP SP3 or W2K3/SP2 or something. Not really a major upgrade. Some spiffy UI enhancements, and more hooks to MSN Music and Shopping, woo-hoo. Who cares. I’m sure that Dell and HP will buy it and it’ll ship heavy come the holidays.
im gonna hold judgement on longhorn until i see it running in final code. granted i have an ODL version of one of the prereleases, but it isnt enough to pass a definative judgement on. i have also seen beta1 run, and over 96 hours of continual use, it did not fail once on the comp it was running on (2200+ amd with 256Mb ram). that alone is enough to say it may shape to a decent OS.
all i hope for is for MS to release a cut down version for old PC’s as well, sorta like a version with only the critical features enabled. or intergrate a “smart” installer that detects what youre running, and installs the appropriate components

Psychaotix, just as XP has 2 tiers of user experience called Classic mode and XP (Visual Style/Luna) mode, Longhorn will ship with 4. There will be Classic mode (so that Longhorn looks like 2000), some mode a little nicer than that (probably XP-like), then the premier tiers called Aero and Aero Glass which will require DX9 video cards (I think I read somewhere that Aero will require 32MB of video memory and Aero Glass 128MB, but that could change). This makes it very flexible for old and new machines. I’m just taking a guess, but I would imagine that any computer that can run XP well right now will be able to run Longhorn adequately in one of the two lower GUI tiers, at the very least.
As for other features of the OS, you can very easily disable any services that you don’t want running. Just because Microsoft turns them on by default, it doesn’t mean that you have to leave them enabled or refuse to upgrade altogether.

I’ve been looking at Longhorn on a few different websites. And sure it looks cool, but Microshit promised us WinFS, Avalon, Indigo, Palladium, and a sidebar. The sidebar’s gone for good, and I see that Avalon is still there. But as far as I know where the hell is palladium and Indigo!? And Explorer is different, just a tad. Longhorn was supposed to come out in 2004, but now its expected 2006. How long can it possibly take to make change the look of something and slightly modify Explorer?

Macs arent to bad, there for the idiots. Not all the support Microsoft has but intuitive and user-friendly interface.
Linux on the otherhand is ****. You practically need a PhD to learn to do anything. Support sucks balls because its primarily open-source and what makes things great is competition (for money). The only good thing about Linux is that its free.

A tech friend of mine has seen it in action, too. He says the safety features are fantastic, I love the fact that MS are putting useful features ahead of useless, but showy, **** like “active desktop”. SP2 rocks! Firewall rocks! Anti-Spyware rocks! Longhorn is gonna rock!
For all those who like to complain, look at your Macintosh friends: They just spent $$$ on OSX Tiger… only to find out all they got for their money was fast searches and “Dashboard” (a calculator/clock/calender/notepad in one). But they’re still lapping it up. Can you IMAGINE how people would react if MS did that?

Not to get involved in one of these unnecessary, somewhat repetitive discussions, but I have a few points I’d like to make.
1) Flaming people because you feel like you’ve got more Linux experience than them is ludicrous. At this point in time, one can be extremely versed in MANY different OS’s, and mastery of the Windows environment at its base level is no less an achivement than knowing how to set up a few cron jobs. Linux is definately cool, and the ideas it represents even cooler, but to chide someone for working in a Windows environment instead of fumbling around with Linux so that they can feel 133t and impress 13 year-old boys is just stupid.
2) I agree that Microsoft is NOT the bastion of innovation and design revolutions that it should be, considering the resources at its disposal. However, if not for Microsoft, I can guarantee you that you wouldn’t be sittng in front of the nice, fast computer that you are now. Whether or not you consider MS to be innovative, you at LEAST have to admit that their overwhelming force on the market has fostered the competition that has allowed your favorite OS to become what it is today. Without the push to meet and beat Windows standards, I doubt we’d be where we are with home computer usage.
3) People want many, many different things, and making everyone happy is impossible. That being said, you have some people posting that it doesn’t look cool enough, and others posting that they won’t have the necessary hardware to run it as is! MS is in the fairly unique position of being the number-one (you can argue all you want, but look at the numbers) desktop for gaming AND business. Meeting the needs of hardcore overclockers and yet making things simple enough for everyone is something that’s not expected of ANY other OS. Apple, for instance, is proprietary, and therefore knows that its software will always work. Linux…well, if it’s not supported and you’re not a driver guru, that’s just it. ONLY Windows is expected to be all things to all people, and that’s a helluva weight to bear. To work out of the box, on (almost) ANY hardware, and doing so with minimal frustration is something that hardly any other vendor has had to do. ( before you attack, yes, Linux IS dealing with this problem as well, but it’s about damned time. Windows was working through these problems more than a decade ago, and succeeding )
4) Despite all of this, do I think MS is floundering? Yes. Do I think that their goals for Longhorn have become muddled? Yes. Do I think that they would keep it even longer in an attempt to resolve some of these issues if people weren’t pushing for release ASAP? Yes. Do I think they would have done better to keep this under wraps until they had a better working foundation? ABSOLUTELY. They’ve opened themselves up to world of hurt by letting people in on this little secret, but I think AS hardcore users, we owe it to ANY software company to let them do their thing without too much interferance. There’s nothing that chaffes my arse worse than people who beg and beg for a beta, and then scoff because it looks incomplete.
Also…have you ever stopped to think that, in terms of a 2D 32-bit UI, we may have gone just about as far as we’re going to, design-wise? I mean, its pretty perfect for mouse + keyboard setups, and you cannot say that the point-n-click interfaces of Windows, Tiger, or Gnome are all THAT different. It makes since to have clickable menus, it makes sense to have expandable menus containing different options, it makes sense to have drag-n-drop. These things won’t be dissapearing any time soon, because they’re the best solutions to working on a 2d space (at least in the industry’s opinion, if not yours). No one expects the industry to reinvent the mouse every quarter, because it works. So what is it that you want? I’ve got a $500 Nvidia card, and I’d love to see the technology that I was hearing about during the original 3XXX releases. However, short of SM 3.0, I can’t think of any way to make buttons any shinier, more transparent, or more interactive than they are now without eating up needless CPU and GPU cycles. So I say f’ck it. Get DesktopX if you want some extra processes running. I’ll be sore not to see WinFS and the like, but to tell you the truth, I think part of the Tao of computers is organization (especially in Linux). I don’t NEED to be able to cross-reference or search my files (I would doubtless disable the extra features anyway), and for those who DO need to, there are alternate software solutions.
Sigh…all that being said, I think that Longhorn will flop for its biggest fans. It HAS gotten too bloated and heavy, leaving no room for the more innovative features that the higher-end user has come to expect. This is one of the few definates that the Linux desktop has over Windows; because they don’t have the advantage of proprietary hardware (Apple) or a ’sink-or-swim’ mentality (Linux), Microsoft can’t allow users the UI freedom that we’ve come to expect from the xWindow system. Again, they have the unique position of trying to attract high-level gamers and modders on the same system that gives Grandma that recognizable start bar that she’s come to expect. They’ve painted themselves into a corner, but it’s a 30+ BILLION DOLLAR corner, and while I can’t see a way for MS to ever be ‘cool’ again, I’d take some online flaming for that kinda cash.
So, yeah…don’t knock them simply because they’re on top. Linux has thousands of talented, innovative, and certainly opinionated people working on it, and while it’s come a LONG way in the last decade, it’s STILL in need of work. Lots of it. If the kind of passion that Linux fosters in its users can’t fix these lingering UI issues, then what can? It all comes down to the fact that we all want something different, and the most customizable platform will always garner support from those who are looking for optomization and performance. But I don’t blame Windows for not wanting to give up their market share to please tweakers like myself. Kill a few processes, install bbLean, and call it a day.

Give me a version of Windows that:
a – I don’t need to install 3 anti-spyware programs and 2 anti-virus programs on just to survive day-to-day use;
b – doesn’t take up 11 gigs for nothing but itself, ms-paint, calc and IE;
and c – can see other partitions on the same disk, even if it can’t write to them
and I’ll probably use it, if for no other reason than commercial games. Also, it wouldn’t hurt if it took under 2 hours to install (without windows update). Is that so much to ask? All I want is built-in spyware/virus protection (it’s not like they’re a new phenomenon which Microsoft has never heard of), a slightly less rediculous disk requirement (call me wierd, but I don’t feel that Windows should take up over a quarter of my laptop’s hard drive) and to play nice with others. I understand you have a monopoly that you need to keep, because it’s not like you have more money than god, but seriously, can’t you mount other partitions? Even if it’s read-only?
Admitedly Linux isn’t perfect, but at least I have those three things.
I think where Longhorn’s UI is really, really lacking is in simplicity. Every window seems to have several many”tasks” the user might want to do, and as a result it is visually overwhelming… the user is confused about what they should do. Less is more folks. Not sure if/when Microsoft will learn that, but if they were really good at copying OS X they’d know that by now. In my opinion, the Longhorn interface is worse than XP… it just assaults the viewer with options and “tasks,” which is visually confusing and misleading. Just present the information in a clear and concise way, and let the user decide what they want to do. Don’t assume that every time someone opens up a folder, they have no idea what they want to do and need a large list of potential tasks to complete.
look at the Tiger – you’ll see the difference and forget about viruses,worms.
For those of you who are sticking with XP: look at XP (Whistler) Beta 1. Its UGLY. The final UI will probably appear in Beta 2 if not RC. This UI is actually very good for a beta.

I have no idea what MS may present people with when they do release a complete effort, be it beta or OS. The examples of their work that have been made available and their own statements as to what they propose to include , does leave a bit to be desired. The very large backword step that was made when they stopped 4074 and what they presented with 5048, has in no way , according to their own information, been recovered. They couldn’t do winfs, they dropped the side bar, and as far as I can understand from all the porting they did with a great deal of what they had in 4074. There will not be much to entice the regular user to go out and buy it on its own. Installed on a pc purchase is where they will rack up their statistics, not from any genuine desire on the users part. If I’m a multi billion dollar global software company leading the Operating System market by a huge margin I’d just put all my newest features in the pre beta semi public releases so everyone that posts on web sites on the internet wouldn’t complain. That the most logical business strategy I can think of. I mean why wouldn’t I, being Microsoft, the most closed source Intellectual Property tyrant on the planet would just give away all my secrets. FFS people don’t use their brains. They don’t have the 3d GUI enabled there. That has to be enabled manually in this build and doesn’t feature any effects etc. If you knew anything of longhorn and driver development you’d know that. This has nothing to show people other than it’s built on the NT kernel, it is a continuation of the development from nt4 -> 2k -> xp! They announced that the next gui would be 3d in like ‘02. Now in ‘05 some specifics are coming out. And for the record the newest “revolutionary” KDE is not alot better and “cooler” than the old KDE. So no Linux has many X-Win desktops to choose from but they don’t all make revolutionary strides forward that impress and awe from build to build. OSX is as always though way ahead of it’s time in the desktop interface. They’re OpenGL and in Tiger it’s quite slick. Without the fluff and dinging it’s really nice.
This desktop is in no way a reference for where Longhorn is going so quit making assumptions. It’s a build release that incorporated the 3dw support (althouth minimally) for driver development. That is fact. This build wasn’t made so you could know what exactly is going on with the OS so don’t assume because you don’t see something it’s not there. WinFS is most likely dropped and they publicly said that. If you tried WinFS you’ll understand why. An average pc would run horribly with WinFS enabled. Imagine SQL query for every time you opened a folder to give you details on content etc. That’s an overdramatic example but should give you an idea. It would take 1GB of RAM to get decent File System performance. Relational database storage with file information is a few years off from the hardware standpoint.
all I can say is – whoa. it took, what, half a dozen missed release dates for THIS? whoa, nice beta, guys. yeah yeah a beta isn’t supposed to be done… but it’s supposed to be ALMOST there. that’s the idea of a beta. features in place, just need to get the bugs worked out. have fun working out the bugs in the 2 weeks between when the features are solidified and when the product ships.
There is nothing Longhorn(now called Vista) has that makes me wanna upgrade.

Why should Longhorn look any different than XP? besides the fact that it’s built around Server 2003, can you really judge an operating system by what you see? honestly. and XP is good enough, hm? then why is microsoft starting to stop offer help and assistance with XP Home, and will stop with Pro by the end of 2006? if XP is so good, then why is Microsoft slowly trying to get away from it. The fact is, if you don’t actually know the structural integrity of the OS, there isn’t really much that you can diss about it.
To be honest, i dont care how it looks – i am more interested on how it works. If its like Linux – stable – i am happy…u can always make things look nice yourself at a later stage if everythings working properly.

I don’t mean offence, but common people think before you post. This is just the first beta. It’s not due out for over a year. If anyone has used a windows beta before, they know each and everyone far from shows the final product. Infact if the final product even remotely showed a comparison to the betas, i wouldn’t go near it. Even the looks of windows vista will be changeing and its to early to judge microsoft. I usualy dislike the company, but they seem to be improving. I stayed with the 64bit xp for a long time while it was developed. It was horrible at first, but the betas improved slowly, and though it was delayed, it was worth the waite. Microsoft is taking time testing the systems they make now unlike before. They are listening to peoples opinions. When the final product comes out, xp will be history and no one except the closeminded people who can’t change with the times will use xp. Don’t be so judgemental and bash Vista. Its going to make windows xp and back look like trash. And one last note as well. Does anyone remember xp betas. Most people hated them. They were unstable and looked like ****. Vista is just begining.

The new FS isnt going to be included with the first release is it? wow, u got over 500kbps on bittorrent downloading vista. im also downloading vista from torrentspy, about 200 seeds and over 1000 peers but im only getting speeds of 10-50 kbps on 2mb broadband. What BitTorrent client are you using, im only using BitTorrent 4.4.1, BitComet sucks, for me.
