Optimize Windows XP

Posted in Computers & Technology, Microsoft, Performance by Elliott Back on January 13th, 2006.

If you really want your version of Microsoft Windows XP to boot faster and run quicker, you should check out this guide. It gives you a few tips that should massively increase your boot time. Tips I and II are the only ones that apply to my system, so I will first setup the shutdown cleanup, and then move the HD boot order higher. Note that if you’re on XP Home, you don’t have gpedit.msc to edit global policies, so you have to run this manually…

From cold boot, without optimization it took 48.51 seconds to get from pressing the power button to the beautiful blue screen of login. After running his tips, it took 46.78. See, the sad thing was, even though I cleaned out the Local Settings/User/Temp/ folder as well, there wasn’t much in my History to clean. Also, changing the boot order doesn’t prevent Windows itself from spinning up the CD to see what’s there. You’d be better off with other optimizations, as suggested in Digg’s comments.

For me, in my BIOS, I can turn off the Sony logo. That will save 4-6 seconds. I can also defragment the page files, remove unneeded users and startup services, and make sure sure boot POST is minimal.
