The hormone imbalance could be caused by a recurrence. I wish him all the best but the letter is just an explanation of why he did not attend Macworld. The kind of cancer he had is a very rare condition but it is also very elusive and very difficult to track. It releases certain hormone or hormone like chemicals in the body that cause weight loss, among other things. No one seems to know in the public what the original pathologic diagnosis was. He did undergo a big surgery (Whipple's procedure), by some reports. This cancer can spread to liver and other organs. I think that they are still looking for this same cancer which is highly elusive. I do not think that Mr. Jobs and his doctors know exactly what this hormonal imbalance is.
