Tropicana Orange Juice Redesign

Posted in Design, Food by Elliott Back on November 25th, 2006.

Tropicana has redesigned their orange juice containers, and the result is very web 2.0:

Note the high-contrast design, clean solid bands of color, and a splendid use of white space. The container packaging is now stronger looking and relaxed.

That carton is making me want to run to the grocery store and buy orange juice and down the carton in front of the checkout stand.

Web 2.0 is so overdone, but I think we can all agree that the idea of simple designs was the best part of it. White space rocks!

Honestly, when I saw it in the refridgerated aisle, I thought it was a generic brand of OJ. I think it is boring, and NOT seeing the cut half of the orange (as in the previous packaging) gives me no clue as to it’s freshness. The previous carton, while perhaps a bit busy, was more celebratory and exciting.

sorry I am not fooled by packaging…. if the product is good, I will buy it… My favorite real juice is Orange Peach Mango… it used to be good… but it seems some stupids at some executive level have decided they aren’t making enough profit… so in the past 4 – 6 months we (my family and I) have not only notice the product has been noticeable watered down but the price has also shot up (doubly annoying) by a good 30 – 40%
    BAD, BAD CORPORATE CITIZENS (PEPSICO)

I live in Toronto area and now I will go out of my way to by another brand of the same flavor which is still the original price that Tropicana was AND it is NOT WATERED DOWN… These idiouts must thing we consumers are real STUPID…. well I have news for them!

  6. Aida says:

With the excuse of new design, Tropicana is just fooling the customers.

The previous pack (96oz) was just fine.
Now with the new pitcher (89oz) we loose 7oz of OJ in favor of a “new improvement”. You certainly think we are just plain STUPID!…..

“You can fool some of the people etc etc”. I am disgusted and will probably stop buying Tropicana Orange juice after I “experienced” your new design. If the company thought it was going to fool everyone with its labelled “new” (and expensive to develop) design it was wrong. What your marketers failed to realize is that consumers are savvy. The others are trapped by advertising and you know it well. The first thing I noticed was that the 1.89 container that I had been buying ever since I can remember that been REDUCED to 1.68. Now if I multiply the difference by the number of containers you expect to sell, that would be a lot of money.
    Thank you

I just want to correct my earlier message. I was too anxious to send the email off before I checked the actual size of the containers I was referring to. It is the 2.89 container that is being replaced by a 2.63 container.
Thank you for publishing my comments.

I am sure that design may be great for some BUT I rather have the Glass square bottle back from the 100 % orange juice I use to buy @ the gas station grocery stores. I have thought of buying orange juice in those containers but rather have the glass. It tastes better. Bring the glass square bottle back its better than paper that gets soggy after awhile & 100% better than plastic that goes into the drinks & foods.
    thanks

    ORANGE PEACH MANGO IS BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friends – Wait until you see the NEWEST version of this package – OMG! It's all gone – the branding, the flavor appeal, the fresh orange – leaving only a generic glass of OJ. The package now looks like a cheap store brand – and regular users will have trouble even identifying it. What was the marketing team thinking? They must have all skipped their MBA classes on the importance of branding. It's a damn shame!

Here's a link to a scan of the new package on shelf today in stores (December 23)

Has anyone noticed that it does not contain a full 1/2 gallon. And I have been buying this the EXTRA PLUP type for year and I know watered down orange juice, and this is WATERED DOWN ORANGE JUICE> Shame on Tropicana

the new packaging is absolutely awful. you can read my thoughts here http://www.loudamplifiermarketing.com/where-is-...

Why are we commenting on orange juice?! :P

I PERSONALLY LOVED THE VERY DISTINCTIVE CONTAINER WHEN IT HAD THE PICTURE OF THE PALM TREE AND THE LITTLE TROPICANA GIRL ON IT. IT WAS SO DELIGHTFUL, EYE CATCHING AND FUN TO LOOK AT IN THE REFRIGERATOR. I’M HOPING TO SEE IT AGAIN IN THE STORES SOON. IT’S MY FAVORITE BRAND OF ORANGE JUICE.
