Why Google Video Sucks

Posted in Google, Google Video, Video, Web 2.0, Webcast by Elliott Back on April 8th, 2006.

I uploaded two short clips to Google Video on February 25, 2006. Guess what, Google, it’s April 8th now and they’re still not live. I keep getting a “Video is verified; stay tuned – it will be live shortly” message when I log in:

google-video-live.jpg

What’s wrong with this picture? I upload two less than 10s video clips to Google Video a month and a half ago, and they’ve yet to be released in a form where I can use it. Now, if I used major competitor YouTube, I’d have these videos live and published on my blog in the same few minutes. I’ve emailed Google Video, but unless the time-to-live becomes reasonable, bloggers and home users are not going to jump on the bandwagon.

While major TV studios and movie companies may be useful assets, the real force behind a video sharing system is the viral nature of user-uploaded content. Without efficient publication of that content, Google Video is a crippled Web 2.0 application.

Update

Thanks for your email. We understand that your videos have been verified, but has not gone “live.” We looked into your account and found that the videos listed below do not meet our minimum length requirement of 10 seconds:

MOV01787.MPG length = 3.92 seconds
MOV01674.MPG length = 2.48 seconds

Please make sure the videos you upload meet our minimum technical requirements. To review our technical requirements, please visit: video.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=26579&topic=1488.

If you have additional Google Video questions, please feel free to visit our Help Center at video.google.com/support. We hope you’ll visit Google Video in the future to see our additions and improvements.

Youtube sucks and Google video sucks even worse. Why are they always doing scheduled maintenance on youtube? Nothing is ever better after these maintenance sessions. Videos still skip and pause when they’re fully downloaded. Seeing those stupid error messages is just as common as seeing one of those piss poor videos. Google is just plain **** and F*ck those @ssholes for selling out. I hope they get a coke habit and end up dead in a gutter.

  14. CF is dumb says:

Youtube has not changed at all since google bought them. I hope you all know that. And CF, why would scheduled maintenance, which is obviously improvements, make you NOT want to go to youtube again? Maybe you people should think out **** before you post it..

  15. fofdsfdsol ffsfdsfdsf says:

Well, too bad that now google has bought youtube huh? ;-)

  16. CF says:

Ever since google bought Youtube it’s been kind of sucky. Then again ; I had no idea it excisted until I saw it on the news that these two guys who started youtube in their garage sold out to google for like a lot of money.

And then I was like "cool". Though it sucks now. It slows down all the time. And recently it’s been down for "scheduled downtown" for a couple days. That makes me not to ever go on there again espeicly with how slow it is. Maybe they’re upgrading their servers or something, I donno.

On the other hand google video just plain sucks. It has larger videos but it’s just as slow as youtube.

  21. Ash says:

I agree with you, I havnt uploaded videos but the ones I downloaded (along with the google video media player) is ****. Lags like hell even when it says its fully loaded, i reckon thats because you need a permanent connection to google….I go elsewhere like break.com or youtube for better quality.
But on the bright side it should improve (eventually)

  22. Jack says:

It does suck- they don’t even have a Linux video player. I’m not a Mac user, but they don’t have that either.

  23. a says:

Sorry Google Video beta is not Web 2.0 complaint, it does not satisfy rule 4.7b, “The website design must make extensive use of rounded corners”. Note the keyword here is beta.
