Dealbreaker Sucks

Posted in Blogging, Finance, Spam by Elliott Back on March 3rd, 2012.

I think it’s time to stop reading dealbreaker in my google reader feeds:

Let’s see why:

  • Two “continue reading” links
  • No full text RSS feed
  • An ugly and stupid “follow Dealbreaker” banner that I doubt anyone will ever click
  • A gigantic google-style text link ad

We wish the web would allow information to transmit openly, but sites continue to push monetization over content. It’s time to switch!

A good solution for the ads being displayed is using AdBlock or another solution of the sort. Obviously, the situation isn’t the best when you want to view ads from sites you do want to support.

Right now I switched over to RSSOwl, which I’ve found has increased my ability to scan headlines and actually decide what I want to read. Setting up custom keyboard shortcuts enables access to the full feed in a browser, or you can try using the built-in browser (I don’t use it myself).

It does have a few of downsides:
    * Advertisements are displayed in full, which is annoying when they’re flash-based. I haven’t found an ad-blocker for it.
    * Flash in Linux doesn’t work out of the box. You might have to put a copy of libflashplayer.so in ~/.mozilla/plugins to have it work properly
