Jerry Chang Does Pachelbel’s Canon in D

Posted in Music, YouTube by Elliott Back on August 30th, 2006.

The New York Times has an article about the internet-famous guitar player JerryC who published a YouTube video of himself playing an electric rock version of Pachelbel’s Canon. The movie was an instant hit, and spawned a huge number of imitations, almost none as good as Jerry C’s original, which you can view below:

Then, a guy only identified as Funtwo published his own version of the song, which was even better performed than the original:

Canon by Funtwo –

Naturally, the Times reporter did his best to track this newcomer down:

By following a series of clues on JerryC’s message board and various Canon Rock videos, I was able to trace funtwo’s video to Jeong-Hyun Lim, a 23-year-old Korean who taught himself guitar over the course of the last six years. Now living in Seoul, he listens avidly to Bach and Vivaldi, and in 2000 he took a month of guitar lessons. He plays an ESP, an Alfee Custon SEC-28OTC with gold-colored detailing. A close analysis of his playing style and a comparison of his appearance in person with that of the figure in the video, left little doubt that Mr. Lim is the elusive funtwo.

Yngwie Malmsteen and trans siberian orchestra and Riock Wakeman all did this version… decades before these kids. Can you guess who their idols are??

    :-)

  8. Moses says:

The kid can play, but not what we’re hearing. The visual is dark, so alot of the fingerings are not clear, but he’s definitely not doing the killer sweeps ala Yngwie Malmsteen. His picking hand doesn’t keep up with the speed of the audio either. He fakes it pretty well though

  9. KennyG says:

I thought he was faking a bit of it too, i’ve seen a lot better guitar playin before. besides, what does the media know about guitar playing

  10. skl says:

i listened to different versions of this song, from satriani to yngwie. but for some reason, despite that i like yngwie’s and satriani’s (canon in C), these two guys kick off! amazing speed and finger tapping and harmonics. Not a fake

We can be as great if WE PRACTICE………. Simple display of mastery on a particular good song……….

  13. Alazar says:

Agreed… allthough im sure they have both tried, PLUs alot of amazing guitar players go un noticed because with the 70’s the guitar solo and, true guitar savonts in major bands, died.
