Kay Jewelers (Kay.com) Sucks
I’m not pleased with the level of service at Kay Jewelers after stopping in at their NYC location across from Macy’s on 34th street. Wendy and I went there to pick out a pair of rings, and settled on these two:

Color: HIJ, Clarity: I1-I2 – 14K White Gold 1/2 Carat t.w. Diamond Anniversary Band

Color: HIJ, Clarity: I1-I2 – 14K White Gold 1/4 Carat t.w. Diamond Band for Him
Not bad rings, not a terrible price. However, in the store once we purchased them, things got bad fast. First, they quoted the rings at the $699 price, but when I received the itemized receipt, the rings were billed at $599 (the correct online price, which we didn’t know at the time). Second, although we had declined their insurance option, there was magic insurance at $75 a piece. You can checkout an uploaded receipt image here, if you like. Tomorrow, I’ll be dropping by again to return both rings and receive a full refund.
Where my ire really gets irked is when I began to shop online for an alternative to the Kay rings (since I’m planning to return them). I took a look at Zales, and found a nearly identical ring, for the same price:

Color: H, Clarity VS1-VS2 1/2 CT. T.W. Diamond Five Stone Band in 14K White Gold
This Zales ring is the same price as the Kay’s Jewelry ring, but at a superior clarity. With free shipping and a $50 off coupon, the total price is $135 less than what Kay’s charged me. Yes, and that’s for a better ring! Zales even offers the Jewelry maintenance services as a free service, whereas Kay tries to tack them on as a $75 additional charge.
Some other red flags about Kay’s Jewelers:
- RetailMeNot doesn’t have any coupons for them. There’s a notice that reads, “Sorry for the inconvenience but this merchant has specifically requested to have all user contributed coupons removed from the RetailMeNot system.” That seems sketchy at best.
- Their Santa Certificates are only good if you spend in $300 increments, at which point you get $100 off. Although, there’s the possibility that at this point Kay’s will quote $100 of list, not advertised price.
I am pleased to see that they have a 2 star rating (out of 5) on RateItAll, a nice consumerist horror story, and something titled Kay Jewelers RUINED MY ENGAGEMENT RING!!!.

You people are just a bunch of idiots. These jewelers don’t rip people off. You do. So tired of hearing u people try to work the system. Give it up. I guarantee they bent over backward for you. Oh and ps I would love to see an attorney that would actually waste your time to take your case lmao
I too am experiencing a horrible situation.
I left my wedding set at Kay Jewelers to get re dipped, cleaned, welded and the regular inspection.
Well, now my rings have not returned. My work order ticket was pass the due date and I have not heard from the store so I called and was told, thank you for your patients and we’ll call you when I hear anything. A few days later NO call. I went to the store, the manager was off and my rings were not in, no one had any information for me, but to call the manager when she was in. I called found out rings where lost/stolen and now they need to be replace, but the diamond was not noted on the work order slip. The diamond was an inheritance and had no paper work. We even went back to the old jeweler and he’s deceased. I also called the district manager and had received NO phone call. Yes, I leave messages every time! I’m so frustrated I will NEVER shop at Kay Jewelers, LACK of Customer Service for sure!!! They really don’t care, no communication or follow up. Not even from their customer service number. I’m now writing a letter to the CEO Mark Light. Since, it’s been a month, NO phone calls from the store manager, district manager and customer service! I’m ready to return to the store and confront the store manager, and contact my Attorney…….
I’ve worked at both Kay’s and Zales. Kay’s sells junk mostly silver and their engagement rings constantly had diamonds fall out at Zales the quality was always better, Just saying…
I like everyone else on this page hate Kay’s. I bough a new setting for my engagement ring in July of 2010. The day i got the ring back from getting my center stone put i little diamonds were missing (this should have been my clue), so it had to be sent out (time #1) i got the ring back at the end or the month it was good for about 3 weeks. I looked down and yet again more little diamonds were missing (#2) had to be sent back out. Got it back and yet again i didn’t even make it out of the store when i look down and more little diamonds were gone, sent out again (#3). This time i asked for my money back they said no, but don’t worry we will get it “fixed”. I got the ring back sometime in Aug or Sept. Now i was getting married out of the country in Oct so i have pictures set up and other events planned that i had to cancel because i didn’t have my engagement ring. So it is now Oct i look down at my ring that i just got back and what do you know more diamonds missing (#4) now I’m mad i got into the store to be told i did something to the ring that is way this is happening, they told me that i was 2 hart on it. I guess wearing it everyday is not whats Kay’s rings are made for. So I get the ring back again and make it to my house this time only to look down and found out that one more diamond fell out. (#5) sent out again, but this time they had to over night it or i wouldn’t have had it for my wedding, this was only after i MF the lady that told me i could just wear it with the diamonds missing to my wedding. I get it back the ring hold up till the middle of Dec when yet again more diamonds missing (#6) sent out again, but this time i told everyone in the store that their stuff is **** and they treat you like S*** and to go somewhere else that they finally replaced the setting. Dumba** me was thing yes my ring is going to get fix and i wouldn’t have to come up here everyday wrong. So my ring come in and what do you know more diamonds were missing (#7). Now i am at war with Kay’s trying to get my money back. I have talk to customer service about the issue and i was told that their was nothing they could do because it is past the 90 days, so i told her that i think its still in the 90 days because they have had the ring more then i have so that shouldn’t count towards my 90 days. I was also told that i would get a gift card for all the problems i was having. I told her that i didn’t need more **** from them that i have enough problems with the **** ring i own why would i want more problems. I also told her that if you are giving out gift cards how about a gas card for all the gas i waste driving up her every other day. So now i have all my paper work for my ring with all the dates that it has been sent in, I am calling the district manager today and if he cant fix the problem i am going to the BBB to report them.
wow pay your debt and learn how to spell
One more thing, **** their six of six standards. Nothing but a load of ****, the customers see the stress and it ***** up business. As for the warranty thing, mamnagement makes you lie and put it on their.
I would like to say as a previous employee of kay jewerlers I had a horrible experience. The copany caes nothing about their employees. They treat you horrible, threaten your job, their DM’s and VP’s are unprofessional; they shouldn’t even be management.
I must say kay jewelers was one of the worst places and company to work for. I dreaded going to work everyday there because I felt such a negative energy from the management.

I too HATE Kays. Bought my bridal set there, have had it 7 years.LUCKILY I purchased the warranty for the extra 100 each ring……..I have needed 8 diamons replaced (little side ones) they just seem to fall out constantly. The first one fell out the day I got it sized but I was told that happens? Then I had to bring it in again for another lost diamong 6 months later. Each year they get my ring at LEAST 2x’s for repairs and when I complained, I was told that is what I get for wearing my ring all the time.HELLO>……..it’s my wedding ring. They said they are not meant to be worn so heavily…WTF does that mean Kay?
I cannot get my money back, I have written numerous letters to there main office to no avail, they sent me a gift card for $50 which I sent back to them explaining I would NEVER purchase ANYTHING from them again…….I despise that store!
DO NOT PURCHASE YOUR BRIDAL SET/RING AT KAY JEWELERS! My fiancee’ purchased the orignial solitaire stone at Kay Jewelers. I wanted a new setting to enhance the stone so I was encouraged to go to a “diamond event”. I found a settting that I liked, but I was unsure if it would have a matching wedding band. I was ASSURED by the staff that there was a matching band, so I trusted this and bought the setting. Soon after, two of the small diamonds on each side of this ring started to sink in, to the point of my ring looking like there were two stones missing on each side. I sent the ring back for repairs numerous times to correct this problem, that was never corrected!
As my wedding approached, I went to the store to begin the process for this matching wedding band that I was told exsisted. Of course, it did not. Not being educated about my options at this point, I was told the only option was to pick an “enhancer” for my ring to go in, and have it custom ‘built’ around my engagement ring. Keep in mind these rings did not match. Thinking this is my only option, I sent the ring in for the work, paying the additional money for the enhancer, and for the custom work. I got the ring back ONE DAY before rehearsal. The ring was so small that I literally had to jam it on my finger at the wedding, it cut my nuckle, and I couldn’t wear it at all on my honeymoon! OH I forgot to mention that going into the store, the lady helping my was also helping herself and chomping on a pulled pork dinner while sitting at the ring counter!!
At this point, my ring needed to be sent back out to be re-sized, and NOW my origianl problem happened again with the small stones. Very long story short, my ring was sent out again, they agreed to let me replace the middle setting with a different one (still doesn’t match). During the MONTH it took them to do this work, I found on their website a matching bridal set, exactly what I wanted!!! NOW they are saying that there is nothing more they can do for me because they have gone “above and beyond” to try and help me. I’m so frustated at this point because NO ONE in a management role will call me back. It’s sickening that they claim to be the #1 Jewelry store in America.
I am sorry to hear this, but I must say, I’ve been dealing with Kay Jewelers for many of years now and I love their products and their service. I have probably spent over $10,000 in the last 4 years alone and have only received top notch customer service, but excellent quality products as well. I’ve only ever had one incident where one ring lost a single small diamond, and they replaced in immediatley and had it back within a week. As I can understand your frustrations with your problem, I honestly do not think your experience should speak for the company as a whole. I’m sure each store is different although they should be meeting all the same expectations, but this is not reality and I’m sure this is not the only company with these problems

RE: Sterling Inc., dba Kay Jewelers Account: xxxxxx6527 / Christopher N
Mr. Mark Light –
I would today light to enlighten you as to the failure of your company to uphold its product and service and credit reporting obligations on my account.
First I tried in vane to correct the matter on the merchandise that I purchase to NO RESOLVE and I was stuck with a faulty One Thousand Dollar watch and ruined credit.
I have since “settled” the matter with your accounting department in full and yet your company is refuses to remove the “CHARGE OFF” to all three of my credit bureaus. This has been a long a disgusting process with Kay Jewelers and I am not a happy camper. I have told many of my family and friends never to use Kay, Jared, and or Sterling for ANY of there needs.
I am also going to start a blog and you can go to http://www.ripoffreport.com I will be spreading the word there as well until the matter of my credit is RESTORED IN FULL.
Your company is the WORST in customer service, product service, and overall business I have ever dealt with. I have a letter releasing me of the obligations and I refuse to pay for an item that was never rectified in full and to make it worse I even purchased your lackluster “WARRANTY” which apparently is about worthless as the paper it is printed on.
I will in my campaign in the next several month, weeks, and or years find a way to put the “GOOD WORD” out as to just how Sterling, Kay, and/or Jared does business. I have written twice to you before and this time I am faxing it hopefully this will get your attention. I just want what is fair – YOU GOT YOUR CASH I WANT MY CREDIT RESTORED AS PAID OR EVEN BETTER DELETED FROM MY BUREAUS!
Respectfully,
Christopher N
